Amazing Facts!

Here is our top ten list of amazing facts related to these amazing animals:

10)   50-ton Humpback whales that go south for the winter do not eat for several months. They live off the energy stored in their blubber layer.

9)   A newborn Finback whale weighs 4,000 pounds, and during the first summer, as we are watching it, the calf will gain over 150 pounds each day!

8)   A large adult Finback weighs more than 25 Ford Explorers, each with a family of four inside.

7)   Bowhead whales can live to be over 200 years old!

6)   A Humpback's pectoral fins - arms for you and us - are the longest of any animal in the world. Up to 15 feet, and each fin can weigh over 1,000 pounds.

5)   If one day you shared breakfast, lunch and dinner with a Humpback whale - and due to his insistence, each meal consisted solely of sardines - after dinner your hungry companion would have 6,500 empty sardine cans next to his chair!

4)   Atlantic white-sided dolphins have 120-150 teeth, but do not chew their food.

3)   Whales must have fresh water to live, but like us, they cannot drink salt water. Do you know the source of their fresh water? If stumped, you can email us for the answer!

2)   The North Atlantic Right whale is the most endangered large whale in the world, with less than 300 individuals.

And our number one favorite amazing whale fact:
1)   The US Navy, through a network of underwater microphones (called hydrophones), has recordings of Humpback and Finback whales along with many other species. In many cases, the whale was recorded on a microphone that was thousands of miles from the whale.
